Message from the Director
Since the exhibition opened in February, audiences have been turning out in record numbers to view Blues In Our Blood: The Artistic Evolution of Taj Mahal and Carole Fredericks at the Springfield Museums. The exhibition is open Tuesday through Sunday until November 9, 2008.
Blues in Our Blood is an exploration of my family, an apparently ordinary African American family that produced an extraordinary collection of artists including GRAMMY Award-winning blues musician Taj Mahal, and Carole Fredericks, the renowned vocalist who achieved stunning success throughout Europe, Africa and Asia. A treasure trove of photographs, film footage and print documents shed light on the historical markers, social conditions and personal dramas that shaped the careers of our two most outstanding family members. Carole’s personal artifacts, including gold records, performance clothing and jewelry have been shipped from Paris to Springfield especially for the exhibition which also incorporates rare film and video footage and photographs from her international tours.
Blues in Our Blood, the exhibition’s evocative title, was inspired by a 1999 song written by Jacques Veneruso and recorded by Carole entitled “J’ai le sang blues,” “I Have Blues in My Blood.” J’ai le sang blues - featured on Carole’s second solo album, Couleurs et parfums – speaks directly to the irrepressible force that resides within the human spirit to fulfill its destiny transcending place, race, gender, language or culture.
My sincere thanks to the staff of the Springfield Museums for this special exhibition and to our sponsors: the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association for the reception celebrating the opening; exhibition sponsors Rugged Intellectual Marketing Guides and Unity First News, and to all those who contributed services and artifacts to make this exhibition possible.
I hope students and teachers, parents and friends will visit Blues in Our Blood at the Springfield Museums. For more information please visit: www.springfieldmuseums.org, 413-263-6800.
