Personnel:
Connie Fredericks-Malone, Director and James Malone, Ph. D, Career-Educational Counselor will team with teachers from the foundation’s network of French educators (K-12 and college) across the country to present a full day or half-day workshop for local teachers. Methodologies employ music videos (DVDs), CDs (songs), the Internet, listening comprehension exercises, performance tasks and vocabulary.
Goals:
Using Power-Point and DVD presentations, participants will explore Carole Fredericks’ early history in the United States, her assimilation into French culture, the trajectory of her music career to celebrity status with Fredericks Goldman Jones, her film roles and finally, her generous humanitarian efforts. Educators from every grade level including college will demonstrate how to use the music videos and songs with students to teach cultural themes, to reinforce grammatical structures, and to practice pronunciation.
Demonstrations include how to use the same song or video with different grade levels. Approaches to cross-curricular projects and school-wide events will be discussed. The career-educational counselor will offer information that demonstrates the value of French in students’ career planning. He will also provide insights about Carole’s personal traits and the strategies she employed to become so successful in her work so that she becomes a role model for students. The counselor will also address the challenges facing many French teacher and offer suggestions on how to enlist the support of parents and the school Guidance departments.
Results:
Teachers will learn how to unleash the power of music to teach French. They will participate in a variety of instructional activities during this hands-on workshop. The benefits include a renewed enthusiasm for the use of contemporary music in the classroom, a handout containing practical lessons that can be immediately implemented in class, websites and additional resources. Participants will have an opportunity to speak with Carole’s sister, Connie Fredericks-Malone, who will share intimate yet unpublished details about Carole’s personal life in France. Contributing Educators and Dr. Jim Malone will help teachers address specific issues concerning their educational community.
